Facebook is slowly getting out of fashion, people simply use it for “background” checks or occasionally look up old classmates from high school who just got engaged. I started my blog for fun and to connect with my family and friends in China, little did I know that one day I would have people from the globe reading it and sending me friendly messages. It’s definitely an amazing feeling to bring happiness around the world!
Along this journey many people have asked me for advice on starting a blog, I am eager to share my experience!
The Eye Traveler is less than 2 years old, I am definitely not a pro but I do have some helpful suggestions for you.
- Pick a Name
It feels like naming your first baby except that you will be identified by this name. Pick your favorite food, movie, love quote, or even your pet’s name!
- Identify Your Content
What are you going to write about? Travel? Food? Fashion? Lifestyle? Sports? A small intro of your blog will attract likeminded soul mates to your platform.
- Set It Up!
You will need a domain to start your website. I suggest using google blogger or word press, both are free. Google blogger is much simpler and easier to manage where as WP can be a bit complicated but you get to design every bit of your blog.
- Get Personal
I personally like clean and minimal blogs with easy-read fonts, but some of the best bloggers have the coolest and most glittering and glamorous background with music playing. It really comes down to personal taste and here are some examples:
Olive Palermo’s blog is straight forward with her name and content selections, easy to read and navigate.
where as Kenza has a giant photograph of herself and then you’ll scroll down until you find her contents.
The Blonde Salad is one of the most successful blogs in the world and I have been following her since high school. Her blog has developed into a magazine style in recent years which provides more contents than just seeing Chiara in different outfits.
A picture says a thousand words, blogs need pictures! If I wanted to read a book, I would.
The Eye Traveler is a big picture-oriented blog and I only use my iphone to take them. To carry another camera is a burden to me.
When you’re taking pictures outdoor, try to stay in shades so the sun is not directly in your face.
But when the sun is unavoidable, mornings and evenings are preferable because they have the softest light.
A up close food pic is an essential ;)
Don’t be embarrassed to take pictures in public or ask someone to take it for you. Grow some balls and just DO it! It’s better to fill your life with ‘Oh well”s than regrets. Most importantly, it’s fun!
- Like & Share
Eventually people will want to like and share your posts on social media. All you need to do is to provide them with an easy button that’s one click away! Here’s how to do it on WP.
- Get Social
It did take me great courage to open my blog, it is a scary commitment. You are opening up your life, your family and your friends to people that you’ve never met, but once you take the leap you’ll conquer all the problems. To be honest, I have only received lovely comments ever since I started.
If you like someone’s blog, leave a nice comment and it will make his/her day! By doing so, you will also drive clicks lead to your own blog too. I have met some of the most amazing people from the blogging world!
As most people know that blogging can bring you free goodies, free meals, free hospitalities and money. It is purely down to each person and their personal goals in the world of internet. From what I know that bloggers can also reach out to companies for collaborations or promotions. Once your blog starts to flourish, things will switch around, PRs will reach out to you for product/service reviews.
I have worked with companies that I use and love. At the end of the day your ethic is way more valuable than a fake review.
- Safety Hazard
Just as there are two sides to every story, not everyone is sipping a cup of coffee while going through your blog with similar interests and passions. Never reveal your personal info: your work, school, definitely not your address!
- Get Advanced
You can always purchase a domain name from GoDaddy. I was lucky enough to be in a social media class in college, my professor basically walked me through the whole process step by step. If you need more assistance in this, please feel free to leave a comment below.
For now, go have fun!
Each person lives such a different lifestyle and goes through different adventures in life. Blogging pulls everyone together and widens up our horizons with just a few clicks!
Leave your blog link in the comment sections and I will be sure to stop by!
